“It happened to be the perfect thing”: experiences of generative AI chatbots for mental health

The global mental health crisis underscores the need for accessible, effective interventions. Chatbots based on generative artificial intelligence (AI), like ChatGPT, are emerging as novel solutions, but research on real-life usage is limited. We interviewed nineteen individuals about their experiences using generative AI chatbots for mental health. Participants reported high engagement and positive impacts, including better relationships and healing from trauma and loss. We developed four themes: (1) a sense of…

Experimental narratives: A comparison of human crowdsourced storytelling and AI storytelling

Abstract The paper proposes a framework that combines behavioral and computational experiments employing fictional prompts as a novel tool for investigating cultural artifacts and social biases in storytelling both by humans and generative AI. The study analyzes 250 stories authored by crowdworkers in June 2019 and 80 stories generated by GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 in March 2023 by merging methods from narratology and inferential statistics. Both crowdworkers and large language models responded to identical prompts about…

Mapping Caregiver Needs to AI Chatbot Design: Strengths and Gaps in Mental Health Support for Alzheimer's and Dementia Caregivers

Family caregivers of individuals with Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementia (AD/ADRD) face significant emotional and logistical challenges that place them at heightened risk for stress, anxiety, and depression. Although recent advances in generative AI—particularly large language models (LLMs)—offer new opportunities to support mental health, little is known about how caregivers perceive and engage with such technologies. To address this gap, we developed Carey, a GPT-4o–based chatbot designed to provide info…

The EAP‐AIAS: Adapting the AI Assessment Scale for English for Academic Purposes

ABSTRACT The advancement of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) is complicating traditional techniques in English for Academic Purposes (EAP) instruction. This paper proposes a novel adaptation of an existing scale (the AI Assessment Scale), which is designed to facilitate effective learning and assessment in the era of GenAI. We label this the EAP AI Assessment Scale (EAP‐AIAS). The EAP‐AIAS consists of five levels, ranging from “No AI” to “Full AI,” each delineating appropriate GenAI usage in EAP tasks.…

The AI risk repository: A meta-review, database, and taxonomy of risks from artificial intelligence

The risks posed by artificial intelligence (AI) concern academics, auditors, policymakers, AI companies, and the public. Researchers, policymakers, and technology companies discuss AI risks using inconsistent terminology-the same word may describe different problems, while different words describe identical concerns. This fragmentation impedes coordinated responses to AI challenges. We address this by creating the AI Risk Repository: a living database of 1,725 risks extracted from 74 existing taxonomies and fram…
